MGL2309: MCS cruise in the Blake Plateau
During summer 2023 I spent five weeks (July 15th to August 19th) aboard the R/V Marcus G. Langseth acquiring multi channel seismic (mcs) reflection data and multi beam around the Blake Plateau in the northern Atlantic ocean. The main purpose of this cruise is trying to understand the origen and the tectonic forces that control the Blake Plateau. In this cruise I participated as part of the scientific party of the expedition and my main role consisted of acquiring and processing the obtained data. This corresponds to my first scientific cruise and it was an incredible experience!
Field work in Isla Tortuga, Baja California Sur, Mexico
We performed a 10-days (August 27th to September 5th) field work in Isla Tortuga, Gulf of California, collecting rock samples for geochemistry, geochronological and paleomagnetic analysis. The Isla Tortuga is a young volcano that is part of the Guaymas Basin, in the Gulf of California. The objectives of this expedition were collecting rock and fault data of this young volcano to understand its origin, evaluate the volcanic activity, and what is its significance in the tectonic evolution story of the Guaymas Basin. In this expedition I participate as the chief scientist in collaboration with my advisor Joann Stock (Caltech), other colleagues from Caltech and from California State University at Sacramento.
